Student Access and Success
Student Access
- Enrollment
- The headcount on the 14th day of the fall semester for all students enrolled in for-credit courses, including those enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.
- Under-represented Enrollment
- The percentage of undergraduate and graduate enrollment that comprises the following under-represented groups: “African-American”, “Hispanic”, “Other ethnic groups”, and students from Tennessee’s 33 most under-represented counties. An individual student is counted once.
- Note: The under-represented counties are Tennessee counties that are ranked in the lower 1/3 of all Tennessee counties for the Educational Factor Score on the Educational Needs Index website.
- These under-represented counties are Benton, Bledsoe, Campbell, Cannon, Claiborne, Clay, Cocke, Crockett, Decatur, DeKalb, Fentress, Grainger, Grundy, Hancock, Hardeman, Haywood, Hickman, Jackson, Johnson, Lake, Lauderdale, Macon, Meigs, Morgan, Overton, Perry, Polk, Rhea, Scott, Trousdale, Union, Warren, White.
- Student financial need met by campuses (%)
- The percentage of financial need that was met for full-time undergraduate students who were awarded any need-based aid. It excludes any aid that was awarded in excess of need as well as any resources that were awarded as loans. This definition corresponds to Section H2.i of the Common Data Set that is filed by all campuses.
Student Success
- Graduation Rate
- The six-year graduation rate (%) for undergraduate. The percentage includes the following categories of students: 1) students who start at a UT campus and graduate from that UT campus, 2) students who start at a UT campus and graduate from any public university in Tennessee, and 3) students who transfer to a UT campus and graduate from that campus, excluding students that transfer between UT campuses.
- Graduation rate for underrepresented groups (%)
- The six-year graduation rate (%) for under-represented undergraduates. The percentage includes the following categories of students: 1) students who start at a UT campus and graduate from that UT campus, 2) students who start at a UT campus and graduate from any public university in Tennessee, and 3) students who transfer from a public university in Tennessee to a UT campus and graduate from that campus.
- Graduated in STEM Majors
- The percentage of all graduates (BS, MS, PhD) that completed their degrees within STEM majors (science, technology, engineering and math) as defined by CIP codes and reported to the Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange, 1700 Asp Ave., Norman, OK 73072, Phone: 405-325-2158, Fax: 405-325-7309 csrde@ou.edu. UTK, UTC and UTM are members of CSRDE.
Research and Economic Development
Research
- Annual research and sponsored program expenditures (million $)
- The total annual expenditure from externally-sponsored projects for all purposes (research, teaching and public service) among UT campuses and institutes.
- Expenditures to be included:

- All sponsored project expenditures (including direct costs and Facilities and Administrative costs) )
- All sponsored project expenditures (including instruction, research, public service, and other functions)
- Interns and Residents programs are part of Graduate Medical Education and should be included. In 2006, this includes some funds designated in restricted accounts and some in unrestricted accounts.
- Expenditures for Contracts, Interns and Residents, Grants, Cooperative Agreements, Non-exchange transactions and Centers of Excellence are included.
- All campuses and institutes enter all sponsored activity data into the COEUS database. Data entry must be standardized among campuses and institutes. Data from the graduate interns and residents program at the Medical center at Knoxville is added manually.
- Externally Funded Faculty - Research
- Percentage of UT faculty members (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor) who have scholarly programs (research, public or instruction) funded by external grants or contracts. The grant or contract must be currently active, but need not pay a portion of the faculty member’s salary.
- Calculations: Numerator is count of all faculty members as defined above listed as a PI or Co-PI on an actively funded grant or contract. Denominator is count of all faculty members (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor) at all UT campuses and institutes (total determined by a snapshot count in October of each year).
- All campuses and institutes must enter all grant and contract data into the COEUS database. Data entry must be standardized among campuses and institutes, including listing PIs and Co-PIs.
- Invention and creation disclosures
- The number of intellectual property disclosures, including inventions and creations during an academic year. (Same as the report supplied to AUTM)
- [This is to include IP disclosures that originate from UT-Battelle (ORNL) if one of the inventors is a UT employee.]
Economic Development
- Intellectual property development (patents + start-up companies + licenses and options)
- The number of number of patents issued, number of start-up companies launched, and number of licenses and options granted for a fiscal year basis. This is the number reported to AUTM.
- [This is to include patents issued and number of start-up companies that originate from UT-Battelle (ORNL) if one of the inventors is a UT employee.]
- Jobs Created or Maintained
- The number of jobs created or maintained by research and technology assistance programs across the UT system. Number of jobs will be estimated using a standard reporting form and will incorporate the Department of Defense formula that is currently utilized by IPS. This formula estimates that additional revenues of $50,000 results in one additional job in the commercial sector. Savings of expenditures are not included as revenue and are not included in job calculations. The report covers the calendar year. In addition, number of actual jobs (FTEs) funded by grant and contract funding, both from sources outside Tennessee and Tennessee sponsors, coming to UT will be determined from annual payroll records.
- Estimated Impact of Technology Transfer
- TThe total direct dollars generated within Tennessee that are attributable to technology transfer and technical or professional assistance provided by UT faculty or staff or the UT Research Foundation (does not include impacts of outside consulting).
- Include from UTRF: license fees, royalty fees, value of equity holdings, venture capital attracted.
- Include from UTRF, IPS, UT Extension, Ag Exp Station and Campuses the value of new product development as a result of technical assistance, the value of increased income as a result of technical or professional assistance, the value of new jobs as a result of technology transfer or technical assistance, the increase in sales as a result of technology transfer or technical assistance, the investment in plant and equipment as a result of technology transfer or technical assistance.

- The number (headcount) of individuals served through an outreach program at UT. The number includes:

Globalization
- Students with UT-sponsored international study experience (%)
- The percentage of undergraduate students with UT-sponsored international study experience. This includes study abroad, semester abroad or similar UT-sponsored or UT-approved experiences outside of the US. This number is reported annually to the Institute for International Education Open Doors report. The numerator should be the number of students that participate in UT-sponsored or UT approved international study programs during the academic year as reported by UT, UT Martin and UT Chattanooga. The denominator will be the official fall enrollment as reported to THEC.
- Number of active, formal international collaboration agreements
- The number of signed (Vice President or Chancellor level) agreements between a University of Tennessee campus or institute and an international partner (campus, agency, organization or corporation) outside of the United States. The agreement must be currently active as manifest by documented engagement within the last 2 years and must have been signed originally or renewed within the last 6 years.
