- The total annual expenditure from externally-sponsored projects for all purposes (research, teaching and public service) among UT campuses and institutes.
- Expenditures to be included:

- All sponsored project expenditures (including direct costs and Facilities and Administrative costs) )
- All sponsored project expenditures (including instruction, research, public service, and other functions)
- Interns and Residents programs are part of Graduate Medical Education and should be included. In 2006, this includes some funds designated in restricted accounts and some in unrestricted accounts.
- Expenditures for Contracts, Interns and Residents, Grants, Cooperative Agreements, Non-exchange transactions and Centers of Excellence are included.
- All campuses and institutes enter all sponsored activity data into the COEUS database. Data entry must be standardized among campuses and institutes. Data from the graduate interns and residents program at the Medical center at Knoxville is added manually.
